Why Do Scales Break Every Year?

I just retired my Weight Watchers WW30WB scale today after buying a Taylor 5703s scale at Walmart. Last year I retired my HealthOMeter scale after replacing the previous scale the year before! This year I have high hopes that this scale (the Taylor 5703s) actually breaks my record of one year of fairly consistent readings!
