I don’t know about you but I have always heard that a person needs to drink from 6 to 8 glasses of water a day and only water counted. Beer, coffee, and soda did not count towards the total. What? Any reasonable person can think this out… water is in beer, coffee, and tea so why don’t they count? And – what is this reliance on bottled water? Has the human race discovered that all of our ancestors died early by drinking river, well, and tap water, in the last twenty years? I will try and address some of these questions in this post.

I will souce much of this post from Professor & Dr. Cynthia Dennison Haines M.D. of St. Johns Mercy Medical Center, St. Louis., MO. Water is about two-thirds of the body weight and is used for cell functions. Water helps regulate body temperature as well as acts as a lubricant. Most of the body’s water needs are met by drinking liquids. The best source of this is water. Some of the water needs are met from food and metabolism.
If a person does not get enough water – they are dehydrated. Severe dehydration is life-threatening. Six to eight, eight ounce glasses of water a day is the current recommendation.
Now for the beer, coffee and soda questions… coffee and cola’s include some diuretic effects so you might have to drink more water to be healthy.
My view on bottled water (can find support in some circles) is it is a crock! I like the taste of bottled water but it is missing minerals that tap water has. The only advantage I can see in bottled water is the taste. I am not one of those that believe in government conspiracies such as fluoride is poisonous in the amounts added. There are tons of foods we eat that can be poisonous in large amounts. In smaller amounts they have a net-positive effect!
Alas – I cannot reason with my wife and step-daughter that tap water is good for them… so I have to go buy bottled water monthly
For those of you who want to rely on water for your diet… I found this YouTube video of a water diet that proponents say really works! And remember whatever diet you try – don’t forget the Water!
