Kenpo Karate Hall of Fame & Plateau!

Last month I was inducted into the Kenpo International Hall of Fame in Chicago, IL. For those of you who do not know, karate is and has been my first love most of my life.  Here is a link to that story on my other blog. Let me just say it was quite an honor to be recognized by my peers.

My former very active lifestyle is part of why I have a fat problem at 52 years old. Not that I am complaining much about it but I have basically had a three week plateau. If you look at my progress you will note it was flat but if you were to see the day to day fluxuations you might see my point. I’ll speak about this some in this post and what my plans are to get past this point. Here is a video of another diet offering but I cannot get to their website… maybe it has gone belly up?

This gal might have had one thing right – if something is not working, try something different! In my case my body just does not work at the same pace as it did when I could spar (fight) for an hour, taking on all comers!

Now my pace is sedate unless I proactively push the pace. I was sick before and during my Chicago trip so I did not really make any gains there. The other slight weight losses you see posted on the progress tab are the lightest weight, many times right after a run or bag workout!

This is kind of disheartening because this new low-salt diet I am eating is also low-calorie but I’ve not dropped much real weight in almost a month.

I can only workout so much in a week because of my other obligations (work, family, yard work, dogs, 2 blogs, and preventing injuries). Looking at my list you might be wondering what ”preventing injuries” is? That is not doing too much of any exercise but slowly working up to it over time.

I was over at fatmanunleashed.com and saw the post about burpees. I decided to give them a try since he was able to do so many. I got to 11 and had to quit. The other day my elbow almost gave out a couple of times – my guess is I over did it.

You see I have to workup to thing much like I have had to for bag work. Another kick I had to work up to is side and rear kicks. When I started back doing bag work this year I injured my knew (pain under the patella) by kicking hard rear kicks into the bag. I had to lay off and just do light and I am finally up to medium kicks months later.

Ok – so much for my wining! I don’t want any cheese but I wanted you all to know I am just like the rest of you. I have to be smart about my workouts now.

I plan on increasing the pace of my bag workouts for a week and stay the same on my diets… and oh yeah… no eating out this week. :)

  • Hey John!

Congratulations on your induction!! Maybe you know this already, but my advanced training was in Tracy’s Kenpo. I studied with Jim Stewart, who is also in the Hall!! Do you know him? He is now an intellectual property attorney in L.A.

    Again, fantastic!!

    Hi Dr. J!

It is a small world. You ran in the same circles as my instructor Dick Willett. He started in San Mateo and San Jose under Ray Klingenburg and Al Tracy. Dick was also inducted into the hall of fame in 2007. I’ll bet they know each other. Here is a link to a post about Dick.

I looked up Jim Stewart and he is reputably a great fighter!

I guess we prove the 4 degrees of separation theory huh?

    Thank you!
