Walking Your Dog; Exercise & Weight Loss!

I have just moved across town and have had to put my diet and aerobic exercise on hold. I just unpacked my mirror (I mean scale) and found (not really a surprise) that I had gained a few pounds! I know that you are shocked (just kidding) but I had rationalized my diet of pizza and jumbo-jacks was mitigated by the amount exercise I was getting. You know… packing, cleaning, raking, moving, unpacking, and getting the new place up to snuff!

The thing about my old house was the wonderful full-acre back yard. My dogs and I wore a dirt track in the back yard by our constant use. I had no problem walking/running after it cooled off to get my exercise! I used my home track because in the old place, the roads did not have sidewalks. The new place has a small back yard and the dogs don’t get the same amount of exercise. In this post I’ll examine the effects of a diet and exercise change as well as my mitigation strategies (during and after the move). I will also point out why the temporary slide does not bother me. I found this video on the exercise and weight-loss benefits of walking dog.

I noticed that the dog lost weight steadly but the guy did not. Interesting but I thought of a way to fix that – have the guy feed the dog and the dog feed the guy! :)

Anyway I agree with this video that getting out regularly with the dogs will have benefits for both you and your dog/s. I am now in this boat because my shepard-cross dogs need exercise and I definitely need exercise. I’ve mapped out a evening walk that takes us about a half hour and now that we have DVR service again – I have no excuses not to work-out!

While we were moving my wife and I were too worn out to cook our regular boca burgers and opted for the fast-food about once or twice a day. Our exercise was increased but it did not match the food intake. We were hungrier due to the increased exercise and I think that we easily (at least I did) eat more calories that my body could burn.

Now that we have completed the move and are back to our normal diets, I am not going to beat myself up over gaining a few pounds. Rather I am going to focus on the activities/behaviors that will lead to increased fitness, health and weight-loss. Walking the dogs will help this goal but I think I’ll clean out the garage soon and start my wights and kick-boxing on the bag to supplement my weight-loss!

What is a heavy bag workout in karate/kick boxing? I found a video of a gal doing a heavy bag workout for your perusal. The thing I like about this woman doing the workout, is she seems to be doing the moves correctly. In other words if she really hit you – it would hurt. I will admit that she is not hard to look at either but I do insist on authenticity when it comes to my fist love – karate!

Bag workouts do not necessarily translate into fighting ability, no more than breaking boards do but working out with karate is one of the highest calorie buring types of exercises one can do. If you want to increase your heart rate, you can simply throw more kicks (that take about four times the effort as a punch).

So my stratigy of buring more calories than I ate did not work but on the other hand, I am now going to start my toning exercises via the bag and weights. My weight loss should start accelerating again as I am changing up my routine. I am happy with my progress but as you will note if you check, I’ve only logged one pound lost in September. I am hoping that sometime in October I will be below that. The only challenges will be the thank you dinner for the folks that helped us move and the Oktobrefest (I try to never miss!).
