Why a Moderate-Fat Diet?

If you have been reading this website, you know that I have written a book endorsing a low-fat diet and I currently follow a medium fat diet. Why would a person want to follow a low-fat diet vs a moderate-fat diet? And what are the rules? All diets have rules right?

I tend to follow a moderate fat diet now because in the long run, I will be able to stick with this easily. If I wanted to lose weight fast I would have went on a low-fat diet. Low-fat diets do not store very much fat at all and if you are also exercising and dieting – you end up losing fat faster than with a moderate-fat diet. The down side is there are trade-offs – namely taste! Cameron Diaz is reportedly using a combination of moderation with junk food and mostly eats a low-carb diet.

Eating a moderate fat diet I should lose about one to two pounds a week depending on several factors:

  • Are you dieting (men 1500 – 1800 cals & women 1000 to 1500 calories)
  • Are you exercising (aerobic exercise burns fat)
  • Are you eating moderate fat (<30 g of fat for men, <20 g of fat for women)

If you can stick with the low-fat, low calories, and exercise, you should have an easy time of it. If you are like me and eat snacks if they are around – you will have a tough time of it. I am at the point of the diet that when someone offers me food, I take it and figure it is just this once! It is never just this once so please try to get your family to support you if you are dieting (whatever diet you like).

I have kept up the exercise well and I even eat my three to four meals a day just fine… but I am finding lots of snacks around the house. I was offered free food (free food is never free… it just seems free!) at work the other day and I ate two lunches. Don’t worry about me… I just have to get a grip… I am still doing two out of three of my rules. I am going to have a talk with my family about all of the snacks (animal cookies today :( ) and offering me extra food. By tomorrow I will be back on track.

Now you may be wondering why I chose Cameron Diaz as the actress example for this post – I selected Cameron because she allows herself to eat junk food occasionally so she can stay on track most of the time. An actress has to keep her figure if she wants to keep working. So even though I have not found evidence of her having a weight issue – she has to stay on a regimen (as I do now) to keep doing what I enjoy watching so much! :)
