Why Do Scales Break Every Year?

I just retired my Weight Watchers WW30WB scale today after buying a Taylor 5703s scale at Walmart. Last year I retired my HealthOMeter scale after replacing the previous scale the year before! This year I have high hopes that this scale (the Taylor 5703s) actually breaks my record of one year of fairly consistent readings!

One of the things you learn in business school is if you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it. I use the scale to keep me honest in my quest to lose unwanted body fat. All I ask is if I step on the scale three times in a minute – it weights the same or nearly so. If the scale gives three wildly different readings – it is time to buy the newest model. This scale cost about $30 or about 58 cents a week (based on how long they last for me).

Some people do not like scales because the body normally fluctuates by five or more pounds a day for men and maybe more for women (if they are retaining fluids at certain times of the month). For those folks, dropping a dress size or seeing their toes are the milestones they get excited about. I however am more of an analytical type… I need to see a chart of my fat loss to be happy… just knowing I am in shape but not the gas mileage (weight loss per week) I attained losing it would drive me nuts! This cat below apparently agrees with me and has been cutting back on gophers before weighing in!

Anyway – for those of you tracking my progress… the weights should be fairly accurate for a year or so again.
